Abstract
Although erosion gullies are usually associated with land degradation, especially in semiarid areas, gullies and associated vegetation may have an important corridor function for seed dispersing animals, in particular birds, and thus contribute to forest rehabilitation by increasing the connectivity between forest relics and set-aside areas. In addition to gully stabilisation, vegetation along gullies may act as a seed source for lateral forest expansion during later stages of development.

Jatropha curcas is nowadays hyped as a multipurpose bio-diesel crop for the drier tropics. At present many projects start implementing the JCL system in developing countries on large scale although few is known about the energy and greenhouse gas balance, and the environmental, land use (soil, water, vegetation and biodiversity) and socio-economic impact of the system.
