Abstract: THE PATIENT WAS A 29 YEAR OLD WITH A
OBSTERTRIC SCORE OF GRAVIDA -1 WITH A
GESTATIONAL AGE OF 13 WEEKS WITH REGULAR
MENSTURAL CYCLES AND NO SIGNIFICANT
MEDICAL HISTORY .ULTRASOUND WAS
PERFORMED BOTH ABDOMINAL AND
TRANSVAGINAL PROBES OF FREQUENCY 3.5
HERTZ AND 5 HERTZ RESPECTIVELY.THE FINDINGS
WERE THAT THE FETUS WAS SHORTER FOR
GESTATIONAL AGE WITH A CROWN RUMP
LENGTH OF 48 MM.ALL FETAL GROWTH
PARAMETERS WERE ON LOWER CENTILES WITH
AN OSSIFIED NASAL BONE AND NUCHAL
TRANSLUCENCY OF 3.1 MM.THERE WAS SEVERE
DEFORMITY OF SPINE WHICH WAS CURVED AND
WITH IRREGULAR VERTEBRAL BODIES WHICH
INCLUDED PARTIAL ABSENCE PARTICULARY
LUMBAR AND SACRAL VERTEBRAE.FETAL HEART
SHOWED NORMAL INFLOWS AND OUT FLOW
TRACTS .FETAL KIDNEYS ,BLADDER ,SMALL
INTESTINES APPEARED NORMAL.THE PATIENT
OPTED TO TERMINATE THE FETUS
UNFORTUNATELY FOLLOW UP WAS LOST

DISCUSSION

THE REAL INCIDENCE OF SPINAL DEFORMITIES
DETECTED IN PRENATAL ULTRASOUD VARIES IN
DIFFERENT POPULATIONS STILL MORE STUDIES
ARE NEEDED TO KNOW THE TRUE INCIDENCE
REPORTS.THE VARIED VERTEBRAL DEFORMITIES
FROM SPINABIFIDA, KYPHOSIS, HEMIVERTEBRAE
AND THE LIST IS ENDLESS.THE COMMONEST IS
SPINABIFIDA (1).WHATEVER IS THE CONDITION
THE INSULT OCCURS IN EARLY STAGES OF
DEVELOPMENT IS AN UNIVERSALLY AGREED
PHENOMENA.CAUDAL REGRESSION SYNDROME
CAN ALSO BE PLACED AS DIFFERENTIAL
DIAGNOSIS WITH SEVERE PARTIAL OR COMPLETE
ABSENCE OF LUMBAR AND SACRAL SPINE ,THE
MOST SEVERE CASES OF SIRENOMELIA WITH
FUSION OF LOWER EXTREMITY WITH AN
INCIDENCE OF 1 IN 350 IN DIABETIC MOTHERS (2)
DIAGNOSIS OF FETAL ANOMALIES ARE IN
INCREASING TREND THOUGH ONLY A TIP OF
ICEBERG IS KNOWN. WE STRONGLY EMPHASISE
THE REQUIREMENT OF CONTINUOUS EDUCATION
AND ACQUIRE ADEQUATE SKILLS TO PICK UP ANOMALIES AT
THE EARLIEST
Summary: ULTRASOUND IS A MAGNONIMOUS IMAGING TECHOLOGY IN CURRENT ERA WHICH MAKES THE DIAGNOSIS OF CONGENITAL MALFORMATIONS IN THE DEVELOPING FETUS EARLIER THAN USUAL PARTICULARLY TRANSVAGINAL ULTRASOUND IN
THE HANDS WITH AN EXPERINCED IMAGING PERSON DOES WONDERS IN PICKING
MALFORMATIONS OF ALL SYSTEMS .HERE WE ARE
PRESENTING A CASE REPORT OF A FEMALE WITH
GESTATIONAL AGE OF 13 WEEKS VISITED US FOR
FIRST TRIMESTER SCAN , WHERE THE FETUS
SHOWED SEVERE LOWER SEGMENTAL SPINAL
